The myth just busted: crocodile are not immortal

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

In the wild, an older, weaker croc is more likely to face starvation or competition, but even in captivity, the animals inevitably die. The most common method is to measure the lifespan of a crocodile- by measuring lamellar growth, rings in bones and teeth which is technically totally unreliable.

Although different techniques were been used to come to a reasonable guess. With keeping inaccuracies in mind, it can be said that all crocodile species have an average lifespan of 30-40 years but in the case of larger species, the lifespan extends from 60 to 70 years. In some cases, a crocodile's lifespan can exceed up to 100 years. For the record, an Australian Zoo crocodile named Mr. Freshie lived to be 140 years.
