History of human chess: what makes it so sickening

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

Human chess is a form of chess in where people take the place of pieces. Typically, Human chess is played outdoors, either on a large chessboard or on the ground.

The game commemorates a legendary chess game played in 1454 by two young knights in order to settle which of them would court the lady that both had fallen in love with. The participants of the game dress accordingly to the chess pieces. the rule was quite strict. Unlike cardboard chess, whenever an attendant loses to the opponent he had to die right there, and the winner gets rewarded as they made their owner feel proud.

It is also said that Mugal emperor Akbar innovated a unique way to enjoy this game with his royal ladies, ministers, and other Mughal nobles, and that game is known as human chess. He designed the center of the courtyard in front of the Diwan-i-Am in the form of a giant chequered board using black and white marbles.

Human chess also came into vogue to form alliances or decisions with the kings without any massacre. A player who loses has to surrender in front of his opponent and had to accept the opponent's ownership over his kingdom. All these games were played in public so none of the players can step back. However, there is no evidence that all these stories are real.
