Charles Joughin: A drunk baker who survived the Titanic sinking

Charles Joughin was the Chief Baker of the RMS Titanic during its maiden and final trip in April 1912. He had a staff of thirteen bakers under him. On the evening of 14 April when the ship hit an iceberg- Charles was off-duty. After the announcement of a crash, he ran up to help others. He helped a lot of women and children to get on the lifeboats. According to his own testimony, he was the last survivor to leave the titanic.



At the time, when he realized that the ship is going to sank- he ran to the deck pantry and drank the whole bottle of whiskey. He said that at that point he had lost his hope to survive. He jumped into the ocean not knowing what will happen next. He paddled over two hours in the fridged Atlantic water Thanks to the alcohol he has imbibed. When the daylight broke he is been spotted by a passing lifeboat member. He was rescued from the sea with only swollen feet.
