"I've never felt physical pain": Ashlyn Blocker

Updated: Jun 15, 2021

Ashlyn Blocker, a 13-year-old girl, who does not feel any physical pain. When Ashlyn sees others getting hurt, she doesn't quite understand what pain they are going through. Both the parents of Ashlyn are always worried about her and they never leave her alone.

Ashlyn has a rare genetic condition that prevents her from feeling pain. It does not mean she can't get hurt. Her parents have to teach her 'things people are not supposed to get injured'- like not to touch the boiling water. The 13-year old is going through a hormonal change-puberty. She is only threatened by emotional consequences. She does not cry very much.

Doctors are still trying to find a cure for her due to this rare genetic disease. They are worried that maybe the relationship between the body and emotions also goes the other way. If a person cannot feel physical pain, can her emotional development hinder?

While the world is wondering what does it be like to be a person who cannot feel pain, or how difficult it is brought up a child who has such a rare disease. Mother's love always remains unconditional, Ashlyn's mother always says, 'she's my normal.'
